Yes, it is the 1948 SAAB XP9248, the first SAAB automobile. Since it was only a prototype, you are not very likely to ever see one in real life… unless you stop by the SAAB Museum in Trollhatten, Sweden. Two-cylinder, two-stroke, transverse engine, front-wheel drive, thermosiphon cooling, four-wheel independent torsion bar suspension, suicide doors, 25 horsepower, 60 mph, and a drag coefficient somewhere below 0.37.

You forgot to mention that it had no rear window (“backlight” to the Brits). After all, airplanes don’t have to back up! Also, that tiny two cylinder engine put out so little heat to combat Scandinavian winters that the radiator was mounted in the firewall so that all of the heat could be diverted into the cabin. This feature was retained in the production 92 (although they did add a rear window).
Interesting additional information, Jack. Actually, though, it was the trunk lid that it didn’t have; it did have a cute pair of rear windows that were amazingly small. And finally I have learned the origin of why the radiator in my 96s and 93s were up and behind the engine. I always thought that my overhead fanshafts were cool. I’d like to share my 1,000+ photos of SAABs with you but we’ll probably never get to share email addresses. I’m on Facebook and, oh, I’ll put my DA account site in that box up there. Clarke – You are correct. I went back and checked my source (“SAAB, The Innovator” by Mark Chatterton) and it was the first scale model of the prototype that didn’t have a rear window. The first running prototype did. Also, the lack of a trunk lid was due to these guys all being airplane designers, and they didn’t want to interrupt the integrity of the monocoque (uni-body) by cutting a hatch into it. Fortunately, by the time the 92 went into production, the company had a marketing department that said it wouldn’t fly (pun intended) without a trunk lid. Some of the sports cars of the era could get away with it (1st gen Corvette and AH Sprite), but not a family sedan.
Also, that fan shaft was a later addition since they needed to add a water pump. As you noted, the original prototype (and early 92’s) used thermosiphon cooling. Just like the Model T Ford! That was fine in the winter, but they overheated very easily in any weather much above freezing.
